Planning an entrance door: details to decide before the quote

Choose an entrance door as a complete assembly: leaf, frame, panel or glazing, lock, handles and threshold. Before comparing PVC and aluminium, define clear access, opening direction, daylight and building connections. The quote should describe the complete configuration, rather than just a profile name.

BO Fenster practical guide
Anthracite entrance door with a glazed sidelight

1. View the entrance from both sides

Photograph the façade and the entrance hall. A panel you like in a catalogue can look different with a sidelight, fanlight or narrow wall. Ask for a drawing of your entrance confirming proportions, colour on each face, handle and glazing position.

2. Keep the passage and swing clear

Draw the door swing alongside furniture, switches and steps. Mention bicycles, shopping or buggies. To avoid confusion about left and right, always state the viewing side of the drawing. Request the clear passage width, which is different from the overall frame width.

3. Balance daylight and privacy

A solid panel, glazing within the leaf and a sidelight create different entrances. Consider daytime conditions and evenings with the hall lights on. Ask for a sample if the effect of decorative glass matters. Have the chosen glass composition and suitability described too; a decorative pattern alone does not explain its characteristics.

4. Describe locking and access

List who uses the door and how they want to enter. Ask what is included for the cylinder, keys, locking and handles. If access control is planned, clarify its power supply, behaviour during a power cut and maintenance. Any stated resistance performance needs evidence matching the complete assembly and configuration ordered.

5. Examine the threshold and building connection

Show changes in floor level, exposure to rain and the condition of the old frame. Ask how the support, weather sealing and finishing will be handled. Reynaers lists different threshold and equipment options for MasterLine 8, noting that availability depends on configuration. A system option therefore does not confirm its feasibility for every entrance.

6. Check what will be supplied and installed

Read the quote with the drawing beside it. The chosen material needs to suit the complete door and installation conditions. Separate requested extras from equipment that is already included.

  • Dimensions, opening direction and clear passage.
  • Panel, glazing, colours and handles on both faces.
  • Lock, cylinder, key quantity and any access control.
  • Removal, disposal, connections and finishing repairs.
  • Adjustment, key handover and operating instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers

Does a glazed door always expose the hall to view?

No. The result depends on the glass and lighting conditions. Look at a sample and explain the privacy you want, particularly after dark.

Does the system name guarantee all the equipment?

No. Panels, locks, thresholds, glass and options need to be described in the quote. A profile family can support several configurations.

Can the existing frame stay?

Its condition, connections and remaining passage need assessment. Ask for the proposed method and associated work before deciding.
