How to compare two window quotes

Compare the scope before the total. Two quotes are comparable only when they describe equivalent openings, equipment and work. Clarify dimensions, glazing, declared performance, installation methods, finishing and exclusions. A missing line needs a question; it does not automatically mean the work is included.

1. Use one shared opening schedule

Number each window on a plan or set of photographs, such as kitchen F1 and bedroom F2. Use the same references in both quotes. Check quantity, dimensions, panel count and opening direction. Fixed glazing and an opening window are different items, even when they fit the same wall opening.

2. Read the configuration behind the system name

A profile name does not describe all the equipment. Ask for the variant, colours on both faces, handles, opening types and accessories. Check whether equipment is included in the base price or offered as an extra. A sales photograph is not enough to settle these details.

3. Compare performance on the same basis

Identify whether figures refer to the glass, frame or complete window. Our separate guide explains Uw, Ug and Uf. Ask which configuration and dimensions each figure describes. State acoustic, security and solar-control needs rather than comparing only the best number in a brochure.

4. Describe installation and surrounding work

Ask whether the old frame stays or is removed and how the internal and external connections will be finished. Compare room protection, disposal, trims and repairs too. One quote may end with the installed window while another includes further finishing. The useful step is to make this difference visible.

5. Record differences in a table

Copy the work into a simple comparison grid. Use “to confirm” for missing information and request a written response. Avoid filling gaps with assumptions.

Scroll the table horizontally if needed.

6. Clarify timing and handover

Separate manufacturing lead time, intended installation date and time on site. Ask for payment terms, applicable warranty documents and the contact for questions after installation. This guide is a reading method; the agreed quote and associated documents still define your arrangements.

  • Request a revised quote when an option changes.
  • Confirm who carries out connections and finishing.
  • Include a function check and handover of instructions.
  • Compare totals once differences in scope are understood.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers

Is the cheapest quote always less complete?

No. Comparing individual items is the way to understand the difference. Products, quantities, installation, options and finishing can all affect the total.

Are approximate measurements enough to start?

They can support an initial discussion. Dimensions and site conditions need confirmation before manufacturing through the process agreed with the company.

What if a task is not mentioned?

Ask whether it is included, excluded or still to be priced, and have the answer recorded in the quote. Do not assume it is included.
