How to choose sliding doors for your terrace

Start with the access width you need, then choose the panel movement and terrace connection. A wide door assembly does not necessarily provide an equally wide opening. Fixed panes, tracks and the opening layout determine the clear passage. Select the material and glazing alongside the building constraints.

BO Fenster practical guide
Glazed opening looking onto the outside of a house

1. Start with how you will use the opening

Will you carry a tray outside, push a buggy through or open the living room widely in summer? Record the passage you need and the furniture layout. Include curtains, radiators and shading. These details are more useful at the first discussion than choosing a profile name from a catalogue.

2. Separate overall width from clear passage

Ask for an elevation marking every fixed pane and moving panel. Which way do the panels move, and where do they sit when open? Assemblies with the same outer width can offer different access. Compare the actual free width at the narrowest point, allowing for handles and end stops.

3. Understand the proposed operating mechanism

A PSK system combines parallel sliding with a tilt position, depending on its equipment. A lift-and-slide system uses the handle action to raise the panel for sliding. DRUTEX and Kömmerling documentation describes these families; it does not make every model interchangeable. Ask for an explanation of the exact opening and closing sequence for your proposed doors.

  • Request a demonstration using a configuration close to yours.
  • Mention any need for external operation or motorisation early.
  • Confirm which ventilation positions the selected model actually offers.

4. Draw the threshold with the finished floors

A low threshold needs coordination with the indoor floor, outdoor paving and water management. Ask for a connection sketch and agree who carries out each part. For renovation work, photograph the existing threshold and mention any water marks. Access and weather sealing need assessment for the actual location before a flush transition is confirmed.

5. Choose glazing and material together

Explain your priorities: daylight, privacy, summer comfort, noise or maintenance. Ask which glazing and finishes are compatible with the chosen size and opening movement. For a sunny elevation, include shading in the discussion. A figure from a brochure example does not automatically describe your future doors.

6. Prepare a comparable enquiry

Provide overall indoor and outdoor photographs, approximate dimensions and a sketch of the passage you want. Manufacturing dimensions still need professional confirmation. Request a quote that clearly describes the product, removal, connections and finishing work.

  • Approximate width and height of the existing opening.
  • Moving panels, access side and preferred sliding direction.
  • Floor levels, site access and any existing shading.
  • Work included around the threshold and façade.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers

Does a two-panel assembly open all the way?

Not necessarily. If one pane is fixed, that section and the overlapping profiles limit the passage. Ask for the clear opening on your configuration drawing.

Can a renovation have a flush threshold?

It depends on the existing levels, support and external connection. Installation details and water management need assessment before this can be confirmed.

Should I choose PVC or aluminium first?

Begin with usage, access and site constraints. Then compare systems that suit your dimensions, finishes and budget.
