Which windows reduce road noise?
A window for road noise should be selected using a declared whole-window acoustic rating suited to the traffic spectrum. High-performing glazing is not enough when the frame, seals, shutter box, air inlet or wall junction remain weak. Indoor protection also depends on the facade and only works properly with the window closed.
Reading acoustic ratings
Acoustic performance is expressed using a single-number rating plus adaptation terms for different noise spectra. For traffic noise, a quotation should identify the rating, spectrum terms and complete tested construction.
The weakest path controls the result
Glazing, frame, seals, hardware, air inlets, shutter boxes and the perimeter junction must work together.
| Element | Risk | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Glazing | Unsuitable construction | Acoustic declaration |
| Seals/hardware | Air leakage | Compression and adjustment |
| Box/air inlet | Direct transmission | Compatible acoustic solution |
| Installation | Perimeter leakage | Continuous controlled junction |
Ratings from our supplier systems
Depending on the tested configuration, Kömmerling states up to 47 dB for Kömmerling 88 and up to 48 dB for Kömmerling 76. Aliplast states up to 45 dB with spectrum terms for Genesis 75. These system maxima are not a site guarantee: glazing, dimensions, seals, installation and the complete facade remain decisive.
Limits of soundproof windows
Acoustic windows reduce noise in closed rooms. They do not protect balconies, gardens or rooms with open windows, so ventilation strategy is part of the project.
Information for the specialist
Describe the source, distance, floor, orientation, worst periods and all facade openings. A survey or acoustic assessment may be required to set the target rating.
- Identify road, rail or aircraft noise
- Assess the complete facade
- Request a whole-window rating
- Coordinate ventilation
- Check joints after installation

Quick answers
Is triple glazing better for noise?
Not automatically. Glass thicknesses, asymmetry, cavities and whole-window performance matter more than pane count alone.
What does Rw mean?
Rw is a single-number rating for airborne sound insulation. Spectrum adaptation terms matter for traffic noise.
Why is traffic still audible through good glazing?
Sound may pass through seals, frames, shutter boxes, air inlets, junctions or other facade elements.
Does an acoustic window work when open?
No. Its benefit is limited to closed indoor spaces.
